Dogs Trust has 17 centres around the country which are all full. At its bases in Leeds and west London, the waiting list for people to leave animals there has grown to six months. The delay is normally just three months.

The Leeds centre currently has a waiting list of around 500 people wanting to hand over their dog. Experts believe more dogs are now being abandoned as owners struggle to cope with the costs of keeping a pet following the economic downturn.....
